Soap Thief

Steve has fifteen years of service and is a constable on a neighbourhood team. He recently went to a call:

“Factory employee seen stealing soap.”

The employees each contribute £2 a week to maintain a cupboard of soap, milk, sugar, coffee and teabags. One person declined to take part, but months later a colleague caught him using the soap. She was outraged and telephoned the police.

Complying with Mimcester policy, the call centre created a crime report for theft. Steve would have preferred to leave it with ‘words of advice’ but he had no choice. Policy dictated that because an offence had been alleged, Steve must take a witness statement and interview the ‘suspect’ who, until this incident, had no police record. The ‘suspect’ refused to accept a caution or an £80 ticket, so he will have to fight this in court.
